Spring Pest Prevention: A 7-Step Checklist for Homeowners
As temperatures climb, insects and rodents become active again and start looking for food, water, and a way into your home. A little prevention now saves a lot of hassle later. Here's our field-tested spring checklist.
1. Seal Up Entry Points
Walk your home's exterior and look for gaps around windows, doors, pipes, and the foundation. Even a crack the width of a pencil is an open door for ants and spiders. Seal gaps with caulk and add weatherstripping or door sweeps where needed.
2. Clear Standing Water
Standing water is a magnet for mosquitoes and other pests. Empty planters, clean out gutters, and fix any drainage issues around the foundation.
3. Trim Vegetation Away From the House
Branches and shrubs touching your home act as bridges for ants, spiders, and rodents. Keep plants trimmed back at least a foot from siding and the roofline.
4. Declutter the Garage and Storage Areas
Cardboard boxes and clutter make perfect harborage for spiders and rodents. Switch to sealed plastic bins and keep storage off the floor where you can.
5. Manage Food and Trash
Wipe up crumbs and spills promptly, store pantry items in sealed containers, and keep outdoor trash bins closed and away from the house.
6. Inspect for Early Nests
Check eaves, soffits, and play structures for the small, early-season wasp nests that are easy to remove now — and dangerous once colonies grow through summer.
7. Schedule a Professional Inspection
The most reliable prevention is a professional set of eyes. A licensed technician can spot conducive conditions and treat the exterior barrier before pests ever make it inside.
